Emotional positivity is a concept related to focusing on and promoting positive emotions in one’s life. Positive psychology, as it is more commonly known, is an area of study in psychology that focuses on the scientific study of positive emotions and behaviors, such as happiness, well-being, resilience, and optimism, and how these aspects can be cultivated and promoted.

Positive psychology is based on empirical research, which is also called field research, and uses scientific approaches to understand human emotions and behavior and to identify strategies and interventions with the main objective of promoting well-being through positive emotions.

Positive emotions are those associated with pleasant experiences and well-being, such as joy, love, gratitude, hope, pride, inspiration, interest, satisfaction, admiration, and serenity.

Far beyond just optimism and positive thinking.

Positive psychology is a relatively new field, having emerged in the 1990s, but has since been recognized as a legitimate discipline within psychology. It is based on a scientific approach to understanding human nature and is supported by practical research, which is conducted using rigorous and sophisticated methods.

It is a branch of psychology that focuses on the study of the positive aspects of the human experience, such as positive emotions, personal strengths, virtues, well-being, and flourishing. It was founded by psychologist Martin Seligman in the late 1990s.

It is important to highlight that positive psychology does not ignore the negative aspects of life or human emotions. Rather, it recognizes that the human experience is complex and multifaceted, and seeks to understand how promoting positive emotions and behaviors can improve quality of life and emotional well-being.

In short, positive psychology is an important component of maintaining our mental health, as it focuses on the study of strengths and virtues that promote emotional health and human betterment.

importance of positive emotions

The impact of positive emotion I never forgot.

I can remember perfectly, as if it was today, a remarkable moment that occurred in my childhood. It was at school, in a math class; the teacher put some new, and more complex, questions on the blackboard. I immediately wrote these questions in my notebook and tried to solve them right away.

Shortly after the teacher finished writing the questions on the blackboard and went to her table, I had already finished solving them, and soon I raised my arm saying that I was done. The teacher looked at me with an expression of distrust and, with a certain harshness, said in a loud and clear voice that it was impossible that I had already completed it and that the questions were probably all wrong. Even so, she asked to take my notebook so that she could examine it.

In front of everyone in the classroom, and with all my classmates watching, she examined the questions one by one, with me by her side, and concluded with some surprise that of all the 10 equations she put on the board, I had managed to get 8 of them correct. At the same time, she pointed to the notebook that was on her desk and asked me to do the 2 questions that I had got wrong, and I immediately did so, managing to get them right this time.

So, at that moment, she looked me in the eyes with a mixture of feelings that involved surprise and pride, she stood up with a big smile and congratulated me in front of everyone who was there.

This remarkable and positive passage in my childhood was decisive for my positive emotions, as it strengthened confidence in my own abilities, promoting a positive pride, which certainly strengthened my self-esteem, causing me a lot of joy and satisfaction, as well as my self-confidence and motivation.

The difficult internal battle for emotional balance.

There was once a young man named William who lived in a small village surrounded by mountains and forests. He had always been a cheerful and energetic person, but he also had a voice in his mind that plagued him with negative thoughts. These two forces, the positive and the negative, were in constant conflict within William.

One day, while walking through the forest, William found a magic stone that granted him the ability to see and interact with these two forces in his mind, which materialized as two distinct creatures. The positive creature had the appearance of a bright and luminous being with a kind and encouraging smile. The negative creature, on the other hand, looked like a dark and threatening being, with red eyes and a bitter expression.

William was fascinated by their new abilities and began to talk to the two creatures daily. He soon saw that the positive creature always gave encouraging advice, helping him overcome obstacles and gain confidence in himself. On the other hand, the negative creature did exactly the opposite, discouraging him and feeding his insecurities.

As time passed, William felt more and more torn between the two creatures. He wanted to believe the positive creature, but the negative creature’s voice was hard to ignore. He began to question whether it was possible to strike a balance between the two and live a full and happy life.

One day, William looked for a wise old lady, known and admired by all for giving wise advice and guidance, who lived on the outskirts of the village. She listened to the story told by William with great attention and interest, sharing with him a very important lesson: the conflict between our positive and negative sides is a natural part of the human mind, but it is possible to find a balance by feeding the positive side and facing the negative with courage and resilience.

With this new perspective in mind, William decided to focus more on nurturing the positive creature and firmly facing the negative. He began to face and challenge his negative thoughts and look for opportunities to grow and develop.

Gradually, the positive creature became stronger and brighter, while the negative one decreased in size and power. Although a negative creature is still present, William now had tools to deal with it and not allow his negative thoughts to dominate his life.

This fable is a powerful metaphor for the battle we often wage in our own mind, between negative and positive emotions and thoughts. She shows us that the conflict between the positive and negative sides of the human mind is inevitable, but it is possible to find balance and live a happy and fulfilling life. She teaches us that the choice of which “right side” to feed is ours, and that we can choose to cultivate more positivity and kindness in our lives, instead of feeding negative emotions and thoughts that harm us. William’s experience is a lesson that our choices and attitudes have a big impact on our lives and on the lives of everyone around us.
